The Single Biggest Mistake People Make With Pain

Today I’d like to talk about the single biggest mistake people make when they have pain, which can have a serious and longer term impact on their health and quality of life.
They ignore the pain hoping that it will eventually go away 🤷♀️
Pain is your body’s way of telling you that something is not right and that you need to get it looked at by an expert.
What would you do if a warning light flashed up on the dashboard of your car? You’d take it straight to a garage to get it checked out for fear of doing further damage if you don’t get it fixed.
It should be exactly the same for us humans. The longer you leave it the more damage you could be doing so why would you take that risk?
Thankfully, we’ve come a long way from the days when our school sports “coach” used to pour cold water on an injury and tell you to just “run it off and you’ll be fine”
Advice like that is risky if you have really hurt yourself and can lead to complications further down the line.
The NHS now count pain as the No. 1 cause of disability in the UK. One in 10 people report that they have regular pain (chronic pain) for longer than a year.
The help is out there so why aren’t people taking action and getting relief?
3 common themes keep coming up 👩⚕️
- People are getting the wrong diagnosis from their doctor. It’s not the doctor’s fault. They are not musculoskeletal experts so it is very difficult for them to know exactly what the underlying cause of the pain is. Medication is also not going to solve the underlying problem.
- Some people just get used to the pain and put up with it. They are not sure who can help them so they don’t seek out the advice from an expert like an osteopath
- There is a perception that pain, like grey hairs, is inevitable as you get older and there is nothing you can do.
There is lots you can do. You just need to speak to the right people and get the right advice and treatment.
