As humans, we are always striving to make ourselves better. We want to be stronger, healthier, more intelligent and more successful.

Brain health is just as important as our physical health. Regularly exercising your brain can improve your quality of life, help you live longer and help fight off brain diseases such as Alzheimer’s and dementia. The good news is boosting your brain health is much easier than you might imagine.

Researchers and brain experts in the UK have recommended the following simple ways to boost our brain health.

Get Quality Sleep

When you get enough quality sleep, your brain does amazing things. It doesn’t sleep when we do, instead it consolidates the learning that took place during the day. If you aren’t sleeping well, your brain could suffer and not be able function properly. If you want to learn how to get a better night’s sleep, read our blog:

Eat Well

It’s a well-established fact that the brain uses more energy than any other human organ and can account for up to 20 percent of the body’s total energy usage each day. A healthy balanced diet rich in vitamins, essential fatty acids like Omega 3 and wholegrains can help to protect our brains from disease. Looking after your gut health is also important for the brain’s function.

Regular Exercise

It is so important to stay active, especially as we get older. Regular exercise has been proven to improve memory, boost your ability to pick up new skills more quickly and to ward off mental aging.

Think Positive/Meditate

Having a positive mindset will help you to live a healthier lifestyle. How many times have you felt tired but pushed yourself to go for that walk or run and when you get back you’re in much better form and have more energy? By setting higher standards for ourselves, and believing in ourselves enough to achieve those goals, we can use that positive attitude to boost our brain health and live a more successful, positive life.

Meditation has been proven to enhance the brain’s ability to function and increases our ability to focus, concentrate and remember facts. Just 15 minutes of meditation daily can show remarkable improvements in those areas. You’ll find loads of helpful meditation videos on YouTube. Our practice manager, Fergus, also swears by an app called Headspace. Check it out. It’s great!

Maintain High Levels of Mental Activity.

Solving puzzles, completing Sudoku pages or simply reading a book can increase brain function and act as a workout for the brain making it stronger, healthier and give it more stamina. It is recommended that you read every day or complete a brain puzzle to stay sharp and mentally alert.
